We had some good photography SEO questions yesterday in the Facebook chat, so I'll be doing this again sometime soon, when I can find a free time in my schedule. We talked about tracking code for website analytics, galleries for photography websites that don't use WordPress, as well as SEO keywords etc.

Hi Sarah - That's a really nice looking card, and the QR code is certainly something that we're going to see a lot more of in the future. Does the QR code take them to a dedicated landing page on the site or to a special offer of some kind?

I did miss the first article on this. But Here is my card design. I don't know that it is So creative necessarily, but I have introduced a QR code so those tech savvy people that recognize it will 'just have to try it out'. I hoping it is a successful yet sneaky call to action.

Our card may look simple enough, but its design is an integral part of our marketing, as it was with our previous card before we retired from commercial work.

The participants we hope to attract for our photo workshops are fun-loving people who take their photography seriously, rather than those who take themselves too seriously.

With my "barefeet" prints all over the card, we tend to scare away those who would likely not meld well with our photo workshop groups. After all, who would want to attend a workshop whose business card had frivolous feet all over it?

We have heard from many of our alumni that it was this whimsy and the way we word our website that attracted them, as it all looked like fun to them. They could see by the images on our website, both ours and those of other alumni, that they would learn a lot about improving their photography by joining us.

Every time we hand out our business cards, we get positive comments. People tell us it looks as though we have a lot of fun in our business. Bingo!

I used to have your run of the mill, paper cards with some basic information on them. I got kind of sick of it after awhile because I always knew that people were just accustomed to seeing cards like this, and therefore most of the cards I was handing out would be discarded, or forgotten about. I'm sure I spent hundreds of dollars on paper cards that were just being thrown out.
After some brainstorming I decided to hire a designer to help me with a new logo and layout for a card. The design was to be as unique as possible and say something about my approach to the photographs I take. We did some research on materials a decided that a clear acrylic would be cool, because then card could be any colour you like. It's also incredibly durable, you can put these cards through the wash and they don't show any signs of wear. The best part is the reaction I get from them, everyone loves them!
I can't say if they have really brought me more business, but if anything the show the kind of care and attention to detail that I have toward my clients.

Here's a photo of the card:

3 part card - almost a mini brochure

Gets comments and more than anything says that I'm a specialist commercial photographer, i.e no weddings, baby photos etc

Works really well at business networking where there are 'general purpose' pro photographers I want to differentiate from.

If there are three photographers in the room, I want to be the one remembered as different - nope, I want to be the one remembered! ;-)

Hi Leon, and thanks for the comment. I understand where you're coming from, but your argument is only correct for <strong><em>some</em></strong> clients. Of course, some will shop around for the cheapest but (if you want to run a healthy and profitable business) they are not our client, and i't okay to send them elsewhere. Stripping away the true value of what we do for the sake of a sale is unacceptable to me under any circumstances. Having said that, there is no reason why you can't sell 8 x 10's as add-on prints to a wall portrait, for example, as a bonus sale at a cheaper rate.

Unfortunately, if we're selling 8 x 10s for $15 then we're going to be out of business pretty soon.

On your point about pricing . . .
the problem there is today's economy . . .
Normal pricing an 8x10(print) would retail for $15.
But in this money crunch, your client will shop for
as 'cheap' as possible. . . so you have to strip away
your 'value' pricing or not get the sale!

All excellent posts! I would add a bit to James' and Emanuel's points. I've learned 2 things about buying equipment:

1. Buy what you need the FIRST time - not a cheap alternative. You will quickly learn that the cheaper gear won't work or last, and you end up having to buy the quality stuff eventually anyways - meaning you've ended up spending more and lost a lot of time.

2. Think of the gear that you actually use, and tie any additions to specific job needs. I've now gotten down to a core group of items that I use on *every* job. If I shop for anything else it will be for a specific use adding additional (billable) capability for a booked job, and not just in the *hopes* of landing a new job. In other words, don't go out and buy a new item just because you hope it will help you land a new job - equipment can't and won't do that. Buy it IF you already landed the job and will need it, and you can't rent it just for that day.
