Business Success: Interest or Commitment – The Crucial Factor

Business success comes down to whether you're merely interested or fully committed...Business success is (or should be) on the mind of every professional photographer, and I’m very thankful for all those who read this blog and my photography business books, listen to the interviews here, or even avail themselves of the opportunity to get coached on their business with me.

However, just the other day, something happened that turned a light on in my own head, when a professional photographer said this to me during a coaching call:

I’m so tired of trying to get clients to hire me – when I talk to them on the phone, they seem all fired up about working with me, but then they never do for some reason…

I understood completely where she was coming from, and I totally sympathize with her feelings of disappointment – we’ve all been where she is right now.

So, we spent about 45 minutes discussing ways I could help her achieve business success, the things she could do, and then I asked her if she wanted me to work with her to help her reach her goals.

Despite her obvious need to seek help, and even though she acknowledged that she needed coaching, can you guess what she said?

Writer's block is an evil myth! Everything you need is already right there in your head...

Writer’s block is an evil myth! Everything you need is already right there in your head…

Come on, admit it. You want to post something on your photography blog, but then get all hung up and stressed out on deciding what to blog about.

Am I right?

This has happened to all bloggers at some point or another – it’s an occupational hazard or something.

You look at the date of your last post and think, “yes, I really should post something, otherwise folks will think my photography business has died“, but you stare at that blank screen until you’re blue in the face, and nothing springs to mind.

But the truth that no one wants you to know is that writer’s block is nothing more than an evil myth.

A lie.

And I’m going to show you just how to bust that myth, and get your photography blog cranked up again!

Are you ready?

Let’s jump in!

5 Clues That A Wedding Photography Job Is Wrong For You

Just when I thought I would have to think extra hard today for an article on how to be a professional photographer, or I might have to resort to talking about underwater knitting, I received a text message yesterday out of the blue from a young family acquaintance (a college student), which read:

“I got my arm twisted into shooting a wedding for a co-worker and she’s not paying me much. Do you have any tips for creative poses? It’s at the botanic gardens.”

If you’ve followed this blog for any length of time, you can imagine my initial reaction, especially if you’ve read such posts as “Mom With A Camera – Will She Kill Your Photography Business?

Your first wedding photography job can be a dream or a nightmare - it's up to you!

Your first job as a wedding photographer can be a “dream” or a “nightmare” – it’s up to you… This was from my 1st wedding, and I made the same mistake back then as many do today… fortunately, this was a small wedding, and this photograph contains all but two of the people present (myself and the minister)! Not too bad, but plenty of room for improvement here…

But the question for me is, how should I respond to this question about wedding photography without causing any offense?

Photography Business: Why Should Anyone Hire You?

Today’s post was inspired by a question posed by one of the members of our LinkedIn Photography Business and Marketing group. The question he raised was “Adding Value – how do you differentiate yourself?“, and I thought my response to this great question would make the basis for a more detailed post here on the blog.

As a professional photographer, you need to know what it is that YOU are doing differently to prove to your clients that you can provide a valuable service that’s worth the price you’re asking. You could also ask yourself what you’re doing that goes over and above the call of duty.

However, the real power of this question is in getting photographers to really think about what motivates their clients to work with them, and what makes them the obvious choice, rather than the photographer next door…
