Today’s photographer interview is with Fort Worth photographer Dave Buchanan, and I was very keen to talk with him about the topic of studio management, and learn from some of the lessons he’s picked up over the course of 30 years in the photography business.
Some of the great topics we covered include:
- How Dave sold his first photo at age 14 and started in the photography business…
- What do we mean by “studio”?
- How can we define “studio management” and why is it important?
- Balancing business and personal time…
- The factors that led to a studio’s failure…
- The things that make Dave’s studio successful…
- Pricing work for profit…
- And a lot more…
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy my chat with Dave as we dive into the exciting world of studio management…

Studio management is a topic that a lot of professional photographers (especially photographers who are new to the photography business) often overlook, allowing themselves to get caught up in the frenzy of trying to run their photography business without having any real sense of organization.
As you heard in my chat with Dave in the video, he learned a lot of valuable lessons when his first studio failed, and he was successfully able to reopen a new studio using what he learned from past experience.
To help give you some great background material and additional learning on this important topic, here are a couple of good books you can get from Amazon on the subject:
