Summary: "Interview: Commercial Photographer Michael Albany"

Listen in to a great interview with commercial photographer Michael Albany, from Philadelphia, as we talk about the business of photography, how to get referrals, strategies to avoid working for free, valuing your work, and much more. Michael has been in the business for many years, and I so appreciate the time he spent with me to share his wisdom with the rest of us.

One of the things I really enjoy about this blog is being able to bring you interviews with other photographers in the industry, and this one is no exception.

Michael Albany, a commercial photographer from Philadelphia, specializing in architecture and portraits, was kind enough to talk with me at length about his photography and his own personal approach to the business.

Some of Michael's great photography

Michael and I first became acquainted through our mutual participation in some of the LinkedIn groups, to which we belong (for example, the Photography Business and Marketing Group), and I always look forward to reading his insightful comments and posts relating to the photography business.

It therefore seemed like a natural extension of that to invite Michael to chat with me about some of his ideas on the photography business.

Keeping A Camera In Front Of Your Face

One of Michael's great portraitsThe title of this post, as you’ll gather from listening to the interview, alludes to the idea that, as photographers, we need to focus on the business, sales and marketing of photography if we’re going to be able to keep that camera in front of our face to create images for our clients.

If we ignore the marketing and sales side of being a professional photographer, then we risk having that camera taken away from us, at least in a professional capacity.

Michael shares some great insights in our conversation, and I know you’ll get a lot of great value out of it.

One of my favorites is the way he deals with being asked to work for free, and how he gets glowing referrals from his clients.

Anyway, enough of me, I’m sure you’re keen to get into the interview itself.

Some of Michael's great photographyAbout Our Speaker: Michael Albany

Commercial Photographer Michael AlbanyMichael is an award winning photographer based out of Philadelphia Pennsylvania.  Specializing in Corporate and portrait photography Michael likes to catch the quirky moments, those times when the prim and proper get goofy.  Portraying a serious image of a serious person is easy.  Getting that same person to let their guard down and give you that look is the trick.  Do that and then you know the smile is real, the image is real and it has a life of its own.

As well as being able to get people to smile and have fun, Michael can get the image that moves you.  His award winning work of the Philadelphia area and its people has been said to give the viewer the “feel of the city.”  Many Philadelphians living away from their native city of brotherly love look at his images and begin to miss all that is Philadelphia.
