One of the things I really enjoy about this blog is being able to bring you interviews with other photographers in the industry, and this one is no exception.
Michael Albany, a commercial photographer from Philadelphia, specializing in architecture and portraits, was kind enough to talk with me at length about his photography and his own personal approach to the business.

Michael and I first became acquainted through our mutual participation in some of the LinkedIn groups, to which we belong (for example, the Photography Business and Marketing Group), and I always look forward to reading his insightful comments and posts relating to the photography business.
It therefore seemed like a natural extension of that to invite Michael to chat with me about some of his ideas on the photography business.

The idea for this post came about because of a great question that was posted on the Photography Business & Marketing group on LinkedIn, which many of you know I administer. If you aren’t yet a member of this group, then I suggest you join and participate in some of the wonderful discussions.
The question I saw was this:
What do you do when your geographical location has tremendous [sociological] limitations for growing your business? What if you can’t move?
My answer turned out to be quite long, and there were also some comments that I think many people could benefit from, so here is the longer, slightly edited, version…

This week, I thought we might try something a little new and different, by hosting a live Twitter Chat with me on the business of family portrait photography.
Are you a portrait photographer who specializes in families, or someone who would like to move into the family portrait niche in your area?

How is business going for you right now? Are you finding it difficult or having a hard time getting the right clients to book your services?

Nobody becomes successful by hiding in the crowd… the lesson to be learned from this simple statement is that, in order for you to be successful in the photography business, you must be able to differentiate yourself from the local competition.
Doing what everyone else is doing will not make you stand out, and you may end up making the same mistakes that everyone else is making!

I’ve been a great fan of Sarah Petty (check out her great interview here: Interview: Sarah Petty – Marketing, Branding, Pricing, Sales And More) and The Joy Of Marketing for several years now, and I continue to be impressed by the quality of the education they provide to photographers.
Their telesummit events are famous in the photography industry for bringing together great speakers and quality content – and these events are always highly-subscribed and full to bursting!

Zenologue is the largest collection of business & marketing resources specifically designed to help the professional photographer achieve peace in their business by focusing on their mindset and business skills. I also realize that my voice is not the only one in the industry (thank goodness!) and I would love to feature other writers on here as guest bloggers, at least once per week.
I’m not looking for the next Shakespeare, or an updated “History Of The World“, just insightful, clear writing that can help other photographers move themselves closer to a state of peace in their business.
If you would like to be considered as a guest blogger, please take a moment to read the “Guest Blogger Guidelines“, and then submit your proposal to me by email to nigel@zenologue.com with the subject line “Guest blogging proposal“…

Some types of photography, especially commercial photography, can require the photographer to make cold calls as a way to generate leads, and as part of the sales process. This can be a daunting process for anyone, and is one of the most feared aspects of the selling process.
Cold-calling can be such a painful prospect for many, in fact, that they avoid it at all costs!
However, for those of you who are brave enough to give cold-calling a try, help is at hand!

As I was preparing to sit down and write for the blog this morning, I noticed that there are a lot of articles on here about using Facebook and blogs for social media marketing, but one thing I haven’t really talked about very much is the LinkedIn social network.
This is obviously a big oversight, which needs to be corrected, especially as I make quite heavy use of LinkedIn myself!
This is the first in a planned series of posts about LinkedIn, and I thought it would be appropriate to start out by looking at some of the myths (and excuses) that prevent some photographers from using it as a leading part of their marketing strategy.
I’m also working on a lengthy PDF book, just for Zenologue Insiders, on how to get the best from your LinkedIn experience, with more in-depth treatment and some lesser-known tips and tricks, so stay tuned for that.
Why Is LinkedIn Not As Popular As Facebook?

Marketing your photography is the key to running a successful business. Good marketing, as we know, is central to generating leads, which in turn become clients, and then go on to become raving fans for your business.

In this Web 2.0 world in which we live, social media has quickly become the de facto requirement for a successful marketing plan, and Facebook plays a major role in that strategy.
How much of a role does Facebook figure in the marketing strategy for your own photography business? Are you wondering how to get more fans, and better engagement from your friends and those who like your business page?

Yesterday, Saturday September 17th, I hosted my monthly group coaching and Q&A call. This is part of my Zenologue Insiders program, but as a special gift to some of my readers, I opened this up to try to help as many people as possible move forward with their business.
The call took place at 2pm Central time (3pm Eastern, 12pm Pacific, 8pm GMT).
Here are some of the great questions that we answered yesterday on the call:
- What’s to keep us from being distracted from our passion in photography when other jobs and assignment opportunities come along?
- How can I market myself when I’m just starting out, essentially taking photography from a hobby into a business?
- How do I develop the confidence to go professional from being a hobbyist?
- How can we get ourselves unstuck and moving again?

This week on the photography business and marketing blog has been focused on the subject of blogging for working photographers. Part 1 looked at Blogging Basics, part 2 dealt with Setting Up A WordPress Blog, and part 3 revealed a great way to Use Blog Pages To Generate Killer Referrals.
However, a question I’ve been asked several times this week has been:
“I really want to start a blog, but I’m not a writer, or I just don’t know what to write.“
So, I thought that would make a good subject for today’s post. Here are six tips (and a bonus tip for Zenologue Insiders) that I hope will help some of you overcome these hurdles, to get you on your way with writing a blog for your business.
